The Intellectual Roots of
Temporal Naturalism

Temporal Naturalism emerges from a serious philosophical and scientific reconsideration of time itself — from the lecture halls of cosmology to a living spiritual practice.

Roberto Mangabeira Unger

Political Philosopher

Roberto Mangabeira Unger

Brazilian-American philosopher and politician whose work challenged the "timeless" block-universe view of reality. Unger argued that the laws of nature are not fixed but may themselves evolve — and that genuine political and social transformation is possible precisely because the future is open.

Lee Smolin

Theoretical Physicist

Lee Smolin

Canadian theoretical physicist and founding member of the Perimeter Institute. Smolin's work in quantum gravity led him to argue that time is not an illusion but the most fundamental feature of reality. Reality is not a static structure — it is an unfolding process in which novelty genuinely emerges.

Ron Rivers

Founder, SpiritDAO

Ron Rivers

Extending the work of Unger and Smolin beyond cosmology and political philosophy, Rivers asked the ethical question: if reality is fundamentally unfolding, what is our responsibility within that unfolding? His answer — the Eight Dignities and SpiritDAO — transformed Temporal Naturalism into a lived spiritual practice and framework for collective action.

The Cosmological Foundation

In contemporary philosophy and theoretical physics, Roberto Mangabeira Unger and Lee Smolin challenged the dominant "timeless" picture of reality. Against the prevailing block-universe view — in which past, present, and future are equally real and the laws of nature are fixed — Unger and Smolin argued that time is fundamental.

Reality is not a static structure but an unfolding process. Even the laws of physics, they suggested, may evolve. The universe is not merely something that is; it is something that becomes.

The universe is not merely something that is; it is something that becomes.

This intellectual partnership laid a rigorous academic foundation for what came to be known as Temporal Naturalism: a commitment to the reality of time, the openness of the future, and the creative emergence of novelty within nature itself.

The Expansion: From Cosmology to Ethical Direction

Building upon this foundation, Ron Rivers extended Temporal Naturalism beyond theoretical physics and political philosophy into lived ethical practice and community formation.

Where Unger and Smolin clarified the metaphysical stakes — that time is real and the universe unfinished — Rivers asked a further question:

If reality is fundamentally unfolding, what is our responsibility within that unfolding?

Rivers articulated the Eight Dignities as a concrete moral orientation within a temporally open universe: food and water, housing, healthcare, education, information, communication, transportation, and energy. These are not abstract ideals, but the material conditions required for human actualization within time.

In this expansion, Temporal Naturalism deepened from a philosophical thesis about the structure of reality into a guiding framework for collective action. The universe is not fixed; therefore, institutions are not fixed. The future is not predetermined; therefore, justice is not static. If time is real, then transformation is real.

SpiritDAO and the Present Moment

SpiritDAO carries this lineage forward by integrating the academic insights of Unger and Smolin with Rivers' ethical and communal articulation. It treats Temporal Naturalism not merely as a theory, but as a lived orientation: individual growth and systemic reform unfolding together in a dynamic universe.

Temporal Naturalism began as a philosophical correction to a timeless metaphysics. Through its development, it has become an invitation — to participate consciously in the becoming of the world.
